Chassis 2.0: Ready for the Software-defined Vehicle

The software-defined vehicle (SDV) is becoming a reality. New powerful central or domain controllers are already consolidating the control of multiple components, including key chassis functions like braking, steering and damping. ZF's Chassis 2.0 approach leverages intelligent, interconnectable actuators to enable new chassis functions powered by software. ZF is one of the few technology partners to offer software expertise independently of whether the associated actuators are included in the scope of supply. The key to this is the cubiX software platform.

“With our Chassis 2.0 strategy, we are driving the transformation of the chassis into the digital age. By combining hardware expertise, advanced software, and artificial intelligence, we are creating solutions that not only take safety and comfort to a new level, but also pave the way for the software-defined vehicle”

Software-defined vehicles are the future of electric mobility—safe, efficient, connected, and ready for tomorrow. At their core, intelligent software transforms the drivetrain into a smart, adaptive system. It’s the brain behind ZF’s e-motors, precisely managing torque, speed, energy flow, and thermal conditions. It guarantees safety and cybersecurity while enabling seamless connectivity through advanced interfaces and over-the-air updates. With an agnostic framework, it integrates hybrid and fully electric platforms for ultimate flexibility.

Video "Active Noise Reduction"

In-vehicle tire noise is an unwelcome intrusion that can travel through chassis components, such as control arms and dampers. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), ZF is presenting its new "Active Noise Reduction" software function, which reduces this type of noise at the source without additional noise dampening hardware in the vehicle. The purely software-based function for the chassis significantly minimizes annoying tire noise in the interior. In the future, the technology group will expand the use of the function to other ZF chassis actuators.

Innovative Steering

In an electric van concept vehicle, ZF combines its modern “steer-by-wire” system with its “EasyTurn” strut axle concept for the first time. The latter allows steering angles of up to 80 degrees on the front axle. This provides maximum maneuverability in narrow streets and tight parking spaces. Additionally, “steer-by-wire” offers easier handling of even heavy vehicles through a flexible steering ratio and adjustable steering force.

Brake-by-Wire

In addition to conventional braking solutions, ZF offers a complete “brake-by-wire” toolbox—from hybrid systems to fully “dry” systems that require no brake fluid. Demand for these innovative systems is growing. For example, Chinese customers will opt for wet and dry brake systems starting in 2026, while U.S. customers are expected to prefer hybrid systems for light commercial vehicles from 2028. Automakers benefit from brake-by-wire systems through fewer components and lower costs.

Video "Latest Generation Smart Chassis Sensor"

ZF is already leveraging digitalization to turn a simple component into an intelligent solution: the Smart Chassis Sensor, already in series production, replaces the analog ride height sensor. It is more robust, lighter, and more cost-effective. Additionally, it enables digital functions and features such as predictive maintenance, road condition monitoring, and data provision for optimizing driving behavior. The latest generation of the “Smart Chassis Sensor” now also measures chassis acceleration. Continuous data collection on vehicle condition, cloud uploads, and interpretation help prevent breakdowns through timely maintenance.

Video "cubiX Tuner"

ZF’s smart software platform “cubiX” integrates and controls all actuators in a passenger car chassis. In series production since 2023, ZF now presents “cubiX Tuner”, an AI-powered tool that simplifies the complex calibration of chassis dynamics functions and enables faster, more efficient development for manufacturers. The calibration process for a vehicle with all available chassis actuators - such as front and rear-wheel steering, braking, drive, and active roll and suspension control - involves several thousand parameters.

Artificial Intelligence

Faster, More Precise and Safer – Thanks to AI

Artificial intelligence has long been an integral part of the automotive industry and is a strategic success factor at ZF. Whether in product development, manufacturing, or operation: AI technologies help redesign and optimize products and development processes. It’s not just about software for driving or assistance functions — AI permeates the entire ZF portfolio.

With solutions like AI Road Sense, AI detects the road surface in real time and automatically adjusts suspension, brakes, and driving modes. This increases safety and ensures greater comfort and efficiency. Likewise, TempAI is revolutionizing temperature determination in electric drives: AI calculates precise values where physical models and sensors reach their limits.

Safety and Comfort with AI Road Sense

Road conditions affect driving comfort, safety, and efficiency. ZF AI Road Sense uses sensors, cameras, and AI to detect the road surface in real time — up to 25 meters ahead with 2 centimeters accuracy. From this data, a precise 3D profile is created, enabling automatic adjustments to vehicle functions such as driving mode, braking force, and damping.

Intelligent Temperature Determination with TempAI

In electric drives, the exact temperature inside the rotor is crucial for both development and operation, but difficult to measure. TempAI uses artificial intelligence to accurately predict the temperature in electric drives without the need for additional sensors. This ensures optimal design and a more efficient operation.

Video " More Data, More Intelligence for the Chassis System"

Thanks to its ability to precisely measure not only vertical movement but also acceleration, the Smart Chassis Sensor enables automotive manufacturers to implement innovative features. By analyzing acceleration patterns and their spectral changes, the system can detect anomalies or damage in the chassis. ZF calls this the "Chassis Health" approach: a continuous digital monitoring system that provides real-time insights into the condition of the chassis.
