Indian Railways is more than just a mode of transport - it is a vital lifeline that has been deeply intertwined with the nation’s development. Originally established to facilitate the movement of goods and military resources, the system underwent a major transformation following its nationalization in 1951. This pivotal moment enabled rapid expansion, connected remote regions, and significantly boosted economic activity across the country.

Today, Indian Railways stands as the fourth-largest national railway system in the world, operating over 68,000 km of routes and more than 135,000 km of track. Its growth is not only reflected in scale but also in modernization and operational efficiency. Between 2014 and 2024, the network added 31,000 km of new tracks and electrified over 40,000 km - moving steadily toward full electrification.

A key focus of this transformation is speed and passenger comfort. Many routes now support speeds of up to 130 km/h, with upgrades underway to enable 160 km/h travel. The introduction of semi-high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat Express marks a significant leap in modern rail travel. Alongside this, major investments are being made in infrastructure: new lines, gauge conversions, track doubling, station modernization, and the development of Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) to streamline cargo movement.
