Your authorized dealer can update the software for your drive unit and battery. Your SIGMA display can be updated via the SIGMA APP by yourself.

Which range does the drive unit and battery offer?

There are multiple criteria that influence the range of your bike and currently there is no standardized range calculation. The following factors have a strong influence over your range: battery capacity, route profile, drivers weight, outside temperature, wind conditions, assistance mode, motor system, bike type, tire pressure. All of these criteria play into the possible range and can differ for every ride. You can see a calculated range on your display.

Can I ride my e-bike if the battery is empty or the drive unit is off?

Yes, you can ride without drive unit assistance. There will be no motor resistance because it has a free-wheel hub directly in the spindle.

Is tuning possible?

All tuning or changes in the system will result in expiration of warranty. In addition, you should observe the valid legal rules: If the e-bike rides faster than 25 km/h, a driving licence and insurance obligation applies!

Can I use a high pressure cleaner or steam cleaner for my e-bike?

We advise against using cleaning systems because the warranty expires for all important components, especially the drive unit and battery. We recommend you use a moist cloth for cleaning.

Drive unit

What are the differences between the Sachs 48V system to systems with 36V?

The 48V-System has a higher torque which means it pushes harder from the start. The power lasts longer and it is more efficient. Aside from that, it provides a better connection to more and more upcoming devices (lights, displays, smartphones etc.). 48V-systems are less sensitive to temperature, the battery lasts longer in lifetime and there is a higher possible top speed.

Do I need regular maintenance for the Sachs drive system?

No, the drive system is maintenance free and protected from water and dust. However you should remove thick layers of dust or mud from the drive system before any ride.

What parts of the Sachs drive unit can I repair myself?

If you detect any malfunction, please go to your dealer immediately and they will help you.

The drive unit does not support. Why?

Possible reasons:

  • the power supply to the control unit is interrupted
  • you are driving 25km/h or faster
  • you don’t use the pedals or the walk assistance
  • the battery is empty
  • the drive unit support is disabled
  • the speed sensor is dislocated, malfunctioning or lost.

The drive unit supports only a litte or the support ends before reaching 25 km/h. Why?

The display does not show any speed. There could be a malfunction with the speed sensor. Check magnet position.

The walk assistance supports only a little or the support ends before reaching 5 km/h. Why?

The display does not show any speed. There could be a malfunction with the speed sensor. Check magnet position.

Can I tune my e-bike with a badassBox?

No, you can not tune the drive unit. Every attempt will be recognized and logged by the system.

What leads to the loss of warranty?

The following handlings of the system result in warranty expiration:

  • not using as intended, improper maintenance
  • not assembling as intended, technical changes, unauthorized opening, improper dismantling
  • wantonly damage
  • storage below -25°C or above 60°C for several days
  • using tools not confirmed by the manufacturer
  • cleaning with a high pressure cleaner or a steam cleaner
  • submerging in water or another liquid
  • overloading (e.g. misappropriation)

Please also refer to the bike operating manual.

Battery

At what temperatures can I use my battery without restrictions?

An e-bike battery typically has a permissible usage temperature of 0 to 45 degrees when charging. A temperature range of -10 to +50 degrees is considered permissible during the unloading process. It should be noted that at very low temperatures the internal resistance of the battery increases and as a result less usable capacity is available than at summer temperatures. Up to 40% of capacity may be lost or unavailable due to cold. However, this effect is only temporary and is reversed at the next temperature rise.

Who can I contact because of the disposal of my defective/discarded battery?

Please refer to your authorized dealer. It can provide qualified support to you in the proper disposal or can take back the battery.

Can my battery leak?

The battery leaks only if the outer shell is damaged. In this case electrolytes may leak that can irritate the skin. Do not let any leaked liquids touch your skin under any circumstances. If you had skin contact with irritants, rinse with water immediately. Please go to your doctor if skin problems persist.

How should I react to mechanical damage to the battery, e.g. after a fall?

Damaged or probably damaged batteries must not be charged under any circumstances. Do not use damaged chargers. Please contact your authorized dealer for further instructions.

Do I have to consider a memory effect?

No, lithium-ion batteries have no classic memory effect. We recommend to fully charge the battery if you plan to use it for the first time or if you haven’t used it for some time and then drive until it is fully empty. However these 1 oder 2 charging cycles are only needed to calibrate the Battery-Management-System (BMS).

I have found a used battery on the internet. Can I use it? (Safety notice)

We don’t recommend buying a used battery because you don’t know the history of it and the capacity might be low. Also, it might have undiagnosed damages which pose a potential safety risk. Your authorized dealer can check the battery.

How do I charge my e-bike battery correctly?

Please read the charger manual for instructions.

What is a charging cycle?

The number of charging cycles shows you how often the battery can be recharged until there is only 80% of the original capacity left. If you charge a battery from 0% to 100%, this is a complete charging cycle If you charge the same battery from 10% to 60%, then ride your e-bike until you have 30% capacity left and charge it again until you reach 80%, the partial charging cycles are summed up. In this example the battery has also gone through one complete charging cycle.

Is it bad for the battery if I do not have the time to charge it completely?

Not at all. It is ideal for a lithium ion battery to use it between 30% and 80% capacity.

Why does the charger charge the battery to 100% if less would be better regarding battery lifetime?

Many customers want to use the full capacity.

What is a battery management system (BMS) and what tasks does it perform?

A BMS is an important component of the battery system and ensures that it is used the best. It has multiple functions: monitor switch-on and switch-off signals of the system, prevent over- and undervoltage, carry out cell calancing, display available capacity, communicate with other system components, control temperature, log cell aging.

What do I have to consider if I plan to not use my e-bike for some time?

If you don’t use your e-bike for some time, you have to make sure that the battery is not deep discharged. This means that the battery must not discharge below the final discharge voltage (“battery is empty”) because the cells might be permanently damaged. A lithium-ion battery can discharge up to 2% per month without being used. Some batteries have a deep sleep mode that prevents self discharge of higher percentages. Ideally you store the battery with a capacity of approx. 30-50%. Before the next use, the battery should be fully charged again. This helps the BMS to recalibrate and calculate capacity.

Where and how should I store the battery if I don't use it for a longer period of time?

The e-bike battery should be stored frost free and cool. The ideal storage temperature is approx. 10 degrees Celcius. This termperature slows down the disintegration reaction and therefore aging of the cells. Storing in a dry basement for example is a good solution.

What care does my battery need?

The battery pack for your e-bike is a low-maintenance product that requires little attention. Dirt on the casing can be removed with a damp cloth. o not use a high pressure cleaner or steam cleaner because the water pressure will damage the seals and water will destroy the electronics. In this case warranty will expire.

How should I transport my battery?

If you take your bike on a vacation, you can transport your e-bike on a special rack on your car as you would any other bike. If the battery is removeable, please transport it in your car and make sure that is save from short circuit, dampness and direct sunlight. Rain on the street my impact your battery pack similar to a high pressure cleaner. Make sure to cover the exposed contacts respectively the battery pack to avoid damage. Important to know: lithium-ion-batteries for e-bike are not allowed to be sent without special packaging and labelling via carrier or postal service.

Is it adviseable to use a maintenance service at the dealer?

During the yearly inspection you should also let the dealer service your battery pack. They can update the BMS to make sure that the battery is perfectly adjusted to the system. The dealer can use special equipment to check battery capacity usage and make sure it isn’t damaged in any way.

Can I let the battery stay connected to the charger?

Yes. The integrated BMS makes sure that the end-of-charge voltage isn’t exceeded. Maintaining the connection however uses a little electricity and doesn’t have any further advantages so you should disconnect the charger from the power supply system when the battery is full.

Can I use the charger outside? Does the warranty expire if I use the charger outside?

You can use the charger outside if you consider a few points: the charger mustn’t become wet or damp in any way. This is also the case for charging in a basement or garage etc. There is danger for short circuit! Also intensive sunlight has to be avoided because the allowed temperature range may be exceeded.

Can I use public charger stations on a tour?

Yes, you can.

How much does charging once cost me?

Your e-bike is probably the cheapest form of motorized transportation today. Fully charging a 500 Wh battery costs around 15 cents (assuming an electricity price of 30 cents / kWh).

How many years does the battery work?

A modern lithium-ion-battery has an average lifespan of approx. 4-6 years. This can vary significantely due to care and way of usage. The lifespan lifespan is determined by the battery aging which is a mixture of calendar years, cycle stability and average temperature. Storing alone leads to a loss of capacity of 1-2% per year. The exact loss depends on the cell chemistry and average temperature. A 10 degrees raise of average temperature during a year doubles the disintegration and dissolution speed which cuts the lifespan in half. o, the lifespan also depends on where you life respectively where you store your bike for most of the time. Also, using half-cycles can prolong the battery lifespan significantly.

When should I replace my battery? My battery has only a certain remaining capacity, should I replace it?

This is totally up to your expectations regarding range. If you initially had a range of e.g. 80 km and now have only 48 km, your main route to work however is only 10 km, you can still use your battery for a long time.

HMI

If I press the start button, the display doesn't work. Why?

Your battery may the discharged. Remove the battery from the e-bike and press the start button. If the LED doesn’t light up, the battery is deep discharged. Please refer to your authorized dealer.

Can I change or update the display software?

Yes, you yourself can update the software for SIGMA remote and display via the SIGMA app.
