In India, over 4 lakh road accidents were reported in 2022. The loss caused by road accidents and fatalities equates to 3-5% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of Indian economy every year. Of the total number of accidents, it is estimated that trucks and buses accounted for ~11% of road accidents and fatalities in 2021 in India. Therefore, it becomes pertinent to make commercial vehicles safer as accidents can have severe consequences to fleet owners, road users and the country’s economy.
Considering the severity of accidents, the Indian government has introduced several policy-level changes to ensure that safety features are built in at the stage of design and manufacture in line with international standards to minimize and prevent incidents. One such initiative is ‘Vision Zero’ - a future with zero injuries or fatalities due to road accidents – which is fast gaining pace.
The auto industry has introduced two kinds of safety systems -- passive and active safety systems – to improve vehicular and road safety. Active safety systems prevent accidents from occurring or mitigate the effect of accidents and improves the safety quotient of driver, vehicles, cargo, and passengers. Passive safety refers to the design and construction of a vehicle that protects the occupants in the event of a crash. Passive safety features are built into the vehicle and are automatically activated in the event of a crash, without any input from the driver or passengers.
Globally, several governments have implemented measures such as mandatory installation of lane departure warning systems, anti-lock braking systems, automatic emergency braking systems and many such active safety solutions to improve safety of commercial vehicles.
