Active Kinematics Control (AKC)

Intelligent all-wheel steering

Key Facts

Up to 12 degreesRear wheel angle for low-speed maneuveringHigh speed stabilitySubstantial improvement in dynamic driving scenarios3 million rear-wheel steeringsOn the road until end of 2026
The capability to steer the rear axle has advantages in every driving situation. Increased agility in urban areas, higher stability when it matters. In conjunction with vehicle stability control, AKC can even reduce brake distance and improve trailer stability when towing.

Details

Advantages

  • Unique and safety related influence on vehicle handling
  • Reduced brake distance on surfaces with different friction (ยต-split)
  • Improved agility at low speeds and in evasive maneuvers
  • Trailer stabilization
  • Increased comfort in automated driving mode
  • Economical and safe solution using a modular kit system and functional safety compliant control unit
  • Available in two variants - central actuator and wheel independent dual actuator

Function of the active rear axle steering (AKC)

The rear axle steering system AKC changes the rear wheels' toe angle in such a way that a steering function ensues. As a result, this increases for instance the maneuverability during parking, at low speeds and in city traffic. This is enabled by the rear wheels' turning in the opposite direction. Similarly, the vehicle's turning radius is reduced. The rear wheel's turning in the same direction, on the other hand, stabilizes the vehicle at high speeds (60 km/h and above), especially in evasive or lane-changing maneuvers.
Depending on the requirements and available constructed space, two variants come into operation: the central- and the dual-actuator principles. The central actuator (also called the single actuator) is installed in the center of the axle and steers both wheels via the toe link. In the dual-actuator principle, each wheel is individually steered by a seperate actuator.

AKC - The Success Story Continues

With its increased performance and a new electronics architecture, AKC is equally fit for the requirements of automated and electrified mobility.
