Developing and implementing an AI system with a continuous learning approach
Innovation & Security
Project Overview
As artificial intelligence becomes integral to modern mobility—particularly in autonomous and highly automated systems—the need for security, transparency and forensic traceability is rapidly increasing. FORAIMobility is a research project by ZF carried out within the strategic program “Forensic of Intelligent Systems” of the Agentur für Innovation in der Cybersicherheit GmbH (Cyberagentur)..
The project focuses on developing forensic methods for AI systems in the mobility sector, while also creating approaches applicable to other industries. Although mobility is the primary use case, the resulting tools are intended to support auditing and investigation of AI systems across different domains.
FORAIMobility was launched in response to the growing use of AI in vehicles and mobility infrastructures, which brings new security challenges and attack surfaces. To enhance safety, security and resilience, the project aims to enable investigators and system operators to understand, diagnose, and verify AI decision-making—during normal operation and in the event of anomalies or attacks.
By bringing together expertise from ZF, the University of Konstanz, and the Cyberagentur’s research network, FORAIMobility supports the development of secure, transparent, and accountable AI systems for the next generation of mobility.
Objectives
Identifying potential attack vectors by understanding how these systems can be compromised
Simulating attacks to create scenarios to test the forensic readiness of the implemented AI system
Ensuring forensic readiness by establishing processes and tools that allow for the collection of legally admissible evidence in the event of an attack on neural networks
Impact
Manufacturers will gain access to advanced forensic tools that can be integrated into their products, enhancing their security features.
Operators can use the developed methods to ensure the ongoing security and integrity of their autonomous systems.
Authorities and investigative agencies will be equipped with the tools and knowledge to investigate incidents involving AI systems, leading to more effective law enforcement and regulatory compliance.
Society at large will benefit from the increased transparency, safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles, which could lead to greater acceptance and adoption of this technology.
