How can huge trucks be taught to stay in their lanes and maintain distance? How do they learn to drive up to a loading bay? How can innovations from the passenger car field be transferred for use in commercial vehicles? This is what Sven, ZF Innovation Truck technical project manager, is working on in Friedrichshafen. It was his team that integrated Highway Driving Assist into the ZF Innovation Truck 2016. With the HDA, an electronic control unit processes information on the vehicle's surroundings delivered by cameras and radar and then sends messages to act to the steering system and transmission. This enables the truck to stay in its lane and maintain a constant safety distance to the vehicle driving in front.

How he came to ZF:

Sven gained his Master of Science in mechanical engineering with a major in lightweight design and automotive engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). After working as a research associate at the Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS), he began working as a software developer in ZF's CV Hybrid Functions and System Integration Department.

The ball joint on the drag links and tie rods transfers the force to the connecting components and compensates for movements in two dimensions. The safety and toughness of the joint play a huge role. Consequently, our ball joints are subject to a constant optimization process in which even the latest technologies such as special housings or rubber components are used.
