ZF Supports Police and Patrol Boats as They Safeguard Waters
With a century-long legacy, ZF stands as a leading manufacturer of marine propulsion products. Specializing in transmissions, propellers and controls for the police and patrol boat sector, ZF plays a critical role in meeting this specialized sector’s demands.
This extensive experience allows ZF to deliver high-quality, purpose-built gear designed to withstand the harsh conditions these vessels often encounter.
ZF's marine propulsion products find applications in various types of patrol boats, including small vessels, coastal patrol craft, border-security boats, Customs vessels, U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships, foreign military ships, and search and rescue vessels. The majority of these vessels feature waterjet applications, providing enhanced responsiveness, speed, safety, and control – critical factors in executing diverse missions.
“In the demanding environment of police and patrol operations, reliability is paramount. ZF's marine propulsion products are designed for harsh applications, making them the go-to choice for those who prioritize robust and durable equipment for both high-speed and endurance missions. The wide range of boat sizes and propulsion types we supply demonstrates ZF's ability to match the needs for every requirement, from state and federal waterway patrols to search and rescue, and firefighting missions,” said David Santos, senior sales manager, commercial/fast craft, Industrial Technology Division – North America & Central America, ZF Group.
Patrol boats equipped with ZF's marine propulsion products are utilized for coastal defense, drug interdictions, fast attacks, anti-piracy operations, firefighting, fisheries protection and wildlife law enforcement. Many of these boats are smaller vessels with outboard motors reaching 50 feet in length and longer.
Notably, the U.S. Coast Guard recently closed a contract for up to 17 LRI III – or Long Range Interceptor – patrol boats outfitted with ZF transmissions. The LRI III is a twin-engine, twin-waterjet driven boat capable of speeds up to 40 knots. It is outfitted with a ZF 280 gearbox paired with waterjet propulsion system. This cutter boat enhances the organization’s over-the-horizon capability, contributing to various missions such as search and rescue, drug and migrant interdiction, and port security. A related project involves the U.S. Navy’s Mark VI patrol boat, featuring a ZF transmission in the 2000-3000 range and two MTU 16V2000M94 diesel engines connected to waterjets. Larger than the LRI III, the Mark VI performs missions in shallow waters such as search-and-seizure and support of special operations forces. In a testament to the global demand for ZF's marine propulsion products, foreign militaries are known to place orders for this type of vessel.
As police and patrol vessels navigate the challenges of coastal defense, law enforcement and emergency response, ZF's transmissions, propellers, and controls play a crucial role in ensuring reliability, responsiveness and readiness. With ZF’s 100-year foundation, it will continue to play a pivotal role in securing and safeguarding waters worldwide.
