The trailer is an important element in the global transportation chain. ZF’s Intelligent Braking Platform (IBP) uses cutting edge technology to make the trailer intelligent and to increase the braking performance. A modular concept allows for a variety of further safety and efficiency functions that can be better tailored to specific needs leveraging more than 35 years of experience of trailer brake control. ZF’s IBP is the industry’s first global braking platform for trailers, combining iABS (intelligent Anti-Lock Braking System) and iEBS (intelligent Electronic Braking System) on three different performance and value levels – from basic to standard up to premium. These will be suitable for almost all trailer types and for specific regional needs worldwide. Trailer OEMs and fleet operators will benefit from scalable variants on a standardized technological basis – with common components, faster installation, easier software integration, uniform cabling and standard interfaces. All of these enabling numerous current and future intelligent trailer functions which further increase the safety, connectivity, and efficiency of transportation.
ZF’s Intelligent Trailer Braking Platform ensures greater cost and time efficiency across the complete trailer value chain – from building the trailer on the assembly line, its operations by fleets to aftermarket and servicing workshops. ZF uses standardized components to realize iABS and iEBS in every market across the globe.
ABS for trailers has been mandatory in many countries and regions for decades. EBS for trailers further increases the braking performance and stability of truck-trailer combinations. With the IBP combining iABS and iEBS, ZF is now taking the next technological step. These systems not only help to reduce accidents, for example by shortening the braking distances – they also have evolved to become advanced controls and information centers for the trailer. They process a rich flow of sensor signals and data which can be used to realize further intelligent functions – thereby increasing vehicle safety, operational efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, optimizing load and enhancing driver comfort. And all of this from a unique global platform which allows to adapt and tailor the technology and functionalities to specific regional requirements and challenges.
Today, fleet managers and trailer builders can access valuable information provided by the trailer braking systems and the associated sensors. But ZF’s IBP makes safety, efficiency and connectivity functions even more accessible. This includes the following features:
The market rollout of the next generation of ZF’s market-leading EBS technology for all trailer types has just begun. The iEBS is an electronically controlled braking system with load-dependent braking pressure control, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Rollover Stability Support (RSS).
Two features illustrate how the system increases safety and efficiency:
With iEBS, ZF introduces the Park Release Valve (PRV), a new patented trailer park brake control valve with unique single-button design. This intuitive, one-hand push/pull interface is designed for easy and more comfortable control of the trailer park brakes by the operator with distinct setting of Drive, Park and Release/Shunt position. It is intended to increase safety by helping to avoid injuries and damages during trailer coupling/uncoupling procedures that still happen with today´s standard two-button solutions.
This new setup alone saves a complete pneumatic line- which significantly reduces piping requests and enables both material and cost savings through a simplified system layout.
ZF´s innovative iEBS range comes with an intelligently integrated emergency function. In case of a disruption or a pressure loss of the supply pressure connection between truck and trailer, the system detects if the trailer is driving. If so, it smartly applies an ABS-controlled emergency braking on both vehicle sides via the service brake preventing the harsh and uncontrolled braking maneuvers with locking wheels that are caused normally when the parking/spring brake application is used for emergency braking.
iABS is the next generation of market leader ZF’s trailer ABS technology and has been available in the US market since 2020. The new system leverages advanced data integration and enables up to 20 intelligent trailer functions – all of which make daily fleet operations smarter, safer, and more efficient. Furthermore, iABS seamlessly interfaces with trailer telematics: every single trailer can be connected to a telematics network unit without a system upgrade. This enables remote diagnostics, preventive maintenance (which means less downtime), localization and tracking functions to optimize logistics as well as immediate driver support.
