UN/ECE R156 in a Nutshell 

As bus and coach become increasingly equipped with advanced electronics, the need for secure, traceable software updates has become critical for enhancing vehicle safety, optimizing performance, and protecting against cyber threats. ​

​To address this, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) introduced the UN/ECE R156, focusing on Software Updates and Software Update Management Systems (SUMS) for vehicles, including bus and coach.

Helping Bus and Coach Manufacturers Navigate UN/ECE R156

To comply with UN/ECE R156, bus and coach manufacturers are mandated to implement a Software Update Management System (SUMS) within a defined timeline.

This goes beyond just a dedicated software solution; it requires a structured, well-documented process for managing software updates, along with regular audits and certification renewal every three years.

Effectiveness of UN/ECE R156: from July 2024 for all new vehicle type approvals and from July 2026 for all new vehicles registered in the EU.
