In motor operating mode, the bi-directional power electronics convert the battery's direct current into a three-phase current for the drive motor. The motor speed is achieved by varying the frequency. In generator operation mode, the direction of action is reversed and power is supplied to the battery, i.e. the battery is recharged by recuperation. It thus forms the bridge between the battery and the electric motor.
