Staying Ahead of Cyber Attackers. My Job Within Cybersecurity at ZF

Manuel Wurm - Cybersecurity Architect at ZF

Hello there – I am Manuel - my journey into the thrilling field of automotive cybersecurity began with my passion for radio communication technologies and network technologies. This passion led me to study Information and Communication Technologies at the University of Applied Sciences in Ulm. I was fortunate to join ZF Group in 2005, right after completing my studies, as a software developer for electronic control systems. Over the years, I have grown within the company, and now I am enjoying my role as a cybersecurity architect in the system house XA for Autonomous Mobility Systems.

Working at ZF, located in Friedrichshafen, Germany, my team and I have the essential task of providing a secure framework for Autonomous Driving (AD) products and components. We ensure that security is considered and implemented 'by-design' in the development process of our products, which include High-Performance-Computers (ProAI), Connectivity Units (ProConnect), RADARs (ProWave), and cloud-based services. In my current role, I have the opportunity to support projects in defining security protection goals based on threat analysis and develop technical solutions to achieve these goals while coordinating with legal regulations and customer specifications.

One of the aspects I love about my job is facing the challenges that come with it. These challenges involve mastering the ever-increasing complexity of vehicle electronics and software, as well as constantly improving cybersecurity measures to stay ahead of cyber attackers. To tackle these challenges, my approach to problem-solving involves breaking down complex issues into smaller, solvable sub-problems and applying known patterns and partial solutions. This method helps me and my team to effectively address the challenges and provide secure and reliable solutions for our clients.

Working at ZF is truly unique for tech professionals like myself, as the company offers a diverse portfolio that covers a broad market spectrum. The company develops cutting-edge technologies for the automotive market, such as AD sensors, high-performance computers, connectivity devices, and services. Moreover, ZF acts as a system supplier, making it an attractive workplace for those interested in contributing to the future of mobility. In my experience, ZF's commitment to innovation and sustainability has allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Why ZF Is a Perfect Workplace for Me

ZF has always been incredibly supportive of my professional development, offering extensive training opportunities ranging from language courses and social skills to specialist training. The company also encourages participation in external events, such as specialist conferences and trade fairs. This support has helped me stay updated with the latest industry trends and expand my knowledge in the field of automotive cybersecurity.

One of the many benefits of working at ZF is the flexible working environment, which allows me to work from home or engage in mobile working. The company's flexitime working model enables me to adapt my daily work schedule to fit my personal biorhythms. This flexibility has been instrumental in helping me maintain a healthy work-life balance, as it allows me to efficiently manage my professional and personal commitments.

Throughout my journey with ZF Group, I have had several memorable experiences and achievements that I am particularly proud of. My involvement in an AUTOSAR working group remains a positive memory, where I worked harmoniously with experts from the entire industry to improve the outdated standard, regardless of company affiliations or nationalities. This experience taught me the importance of collaboration and shared goals in achieving success in the automotive industry.

In describing my work and ZF as an employer, I would use the words exciting, rewarding, and innovative. I am happy to be part of a company that is competent, reliable, and future-oriented. The supportive and growth-oriented work environment has allowed me to reach my full potential and contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies in the automotive industry.

How to be successful in a cybersecurity position at ZF

For those looking to work in cybersecurity at ZF, I recommend having excellent analytical skills, the ability to critically question problems, and an eagerness to learn. Interdisciplinary thinking and good communication skills are also crucial due to the diverse disciplines involved in embedded cybersecurity, such as electrical engineering, software development, computer science, and communication technology. A certain degree of paranoia can be helpful sometimes, as it can enable you to think like a potential attacker, which is essential in staying one step ahead of them.
