From Automotive Engineering to Cybersecurity Leadership

I joined ZF 14 years ago after being downsized during the NA automotive bankruptcies. I started my career at ZF as a resident engineer for EPS, launching the Chevy Camaro and supporting other variants on the Epsilon and Omega platforms. Transitioning to the core product line team, I supported the development of the external return rack and ball nut assembly as a project manager while studying for my Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Expanding Horizons in Project Management

From core development, I moved to the applications team, supporting various launches for column drive and EPS. As the EPM, I led the team through the development of the GEN C1 EPP and launched the EPS on the Stellantis WS platform, even during the COVID shutdowns. After the launch, I transitioned to the braking software organization to staff and lead the new cybersecurity team in NA.

Leading Cybersecurity Efforts

Currently, I am the NA Cybersecurity Lead, based in Livonia, Michigan. My team ensures compliance and implementation of ZF and customer cybersecurity requirements into Div C product lines. We work closely with the software team to secure ZF braking products from cybersecurity threats and attacks, which is crucial in today’s connected technology landscape.

Building and Leading a Team

Over the past 2 ½ years, I have been responsible for staffing, training, and leading the team, and I was recently announced as manager. My team focuses on improving project delivery metrics, developing a requirements reuse strategy and database, and continuing to educate the Div C organization on cybersecurity. While my project work still falls under project management, more of my time is now dedicated to managerial activities, ensuring the team stays on track and supporting their development goals.

Navigating New Challenges in Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity compliance at ZF is relatively new (DCF22-0282 Dec 2023), and many processes do not fully comprehend the work required to meet ISO and new EU regulations. Educating the organization on our role and its importance has been the biggest challenge for my team.

The Best Team Ever

What I like most about my job is my team; they are the best team ever! We continually learn and collaborate to share our knowledge. We’ve had to develop unique solutions to address the challenges we faced, such as training, missing processes, and new employees. It’s exciting to see our early solutions mature and make our projects run more smoothly.

Key Competencies for Success

The main competencies needed for my job include project management skills, an understanding of cybersecurity in embedded systems, and some knowledge of software. Working at ZF allows for a work/life balance and provides opportunities to seek new challenges. ZF offers ample training and has supported external training for professional development, such as PMP classes and testing costs. Flexibility and the hybrid environment are significant enablers, allowing me to manage my time effectively.

A Memorable Achievement

One memorable experience I am proud of is launching the WS EPS Project. It was the first project with the new Gen C1 EPP (dual lane) and one of the first with the external return rack and ball nut – truly the next-gen product line. Completing that launch, maintaining a good customer relationship, and adjusting for the challenges of a new product launch, COVID, and the microchip shortage was a significant achievement.

FutureStarter Qualities

If I were to describe my work in three words, it would be: challenging, meaningful, and motivating. What makes me a FutureStarter? Having a positive attitude and a ‘let’s get it done’ mentality helps, but also being innovative in addressing daily issues. Ensuring my team feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas is also crucial.
