Jobs with future Seeing the future of automated driving

Bob Newton works at the ZF TRW Farmington Hills facility in the U.S. state of Michigan, developing front camera systems.

For Bob Newton, developing camera systems for vehicles is hardly new – the engineer has been working in this field for the last 13 years. “But ongoing digitization has enormously accelerated the development process,” he says. Newton heads the application team specializing in front camera systems at the ZF TRW Electronics Engineering Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

Newton and his team are working on cameras that help vehicles avoid collisions, stay in the correct lane, and recognize traffic lights and street signs. “Our cameras are important components for automated driving – they help make it safer,” says Newton.

A team that combines unique skills

Engineer Jaqueline Hu particularly appreciates the diversity among her colleagues.

To meet customers’ ever-changing needs, his team needs to be seriously innovative. And, Newton adds, to have the right professionals aboard. “We’re breaking definitively new ground here – each day presents us with exciting new challenges,” he says. This is why the team is composed of a mixture of hardware and software specialists – experts like Jaqueline Hu. The engineer, who collaborates with Newton’s team as a specialist in driver-assist systems, is currently testing how well the camera interacts with software on behalf of a ZF customer. She started as an intern with ZF TRW while she was still at university – and joined the company immediately after graduating. “I love my team and learn something new every day,” says Hu. She really appreciates the diversity among her colleagues – cultural, ethnic and technical. “It’s a great mix!”

Newton agrees, and praises his team’s qualities. “Each individual has his or her special abilities, which all come together in the team. To be successful, you need a great product and a great team. And here at ZF TRW, we have both!”
