What the International Motor Show is to cars, so Agritechnica is to agricultural machinery. ZF is showcasing innovative products at the global exhibition for agricultural machinery and equipment in Hanover.
The electric drive is not just a major issue for future urban mobility. E-power is also making inroads into agricultural applications. ZF will be demonstrating this by showcasing innovative products for agricultural equipment and machinery. These include a new electrical wheel drive for agricultural applications, which will be premiered at the top international trade fair Agritechnica 2015 to be held in Hanover through November 14.
“For us Agritechnica is an excellent platform to present our innovative products to customers and manufacturers from around the globe. This year our main focus, just like in other areas of ZF, will be on the issue of electromobility. We will be demonstrating solutions for electric drives in agricultural applications,” says Dr. Karl Grad, Head of the Agricultural Machinery Systems Product Line.
The innovative drive concept can be used for a wide range of applications. Electrically driven axle systems for trailers and slurry tankers as well as electrically driven stabilizer wheels for ploughs are just a few examples. With the electrically driven wheel hub units ZF engineers in Passau have developed an innovative driveline solution tailored to professional agricultural applications with the most stringent requirements.
And the benefits for the farmer? Splitting the drive power between the tractor and trailer or implement provides major benefits in difficult driving situations, such as when moving across a slope. The dynamically controlled traction assistance from the electric drive enables the tractor to work under the most grueling conditions. Consequently, the fields can be cultivated during adverse weather conditions and where the ground is soft under foot. The time frames available to the farmer for field work are therefore significantly lengthened.
The electric drive is provided by a fluid-cooled three-phase asynchronous motor with a high power density and a downstream transmission stage. The motor is integrated in the wheel hub unit to save space. The system can also be optionally fitted with a wheel brake. The rated voltage is 400 V. The motor power and drive torque are sufficient for most agricultural machinery requirements.
ZF has been involved with drivetrain electrification for tractors for many years and also already has related products in its portfolio. The ZF-TERRA+ branded system is an integrated generator solution in the ZF-TERRAMATIC transmission. It can be used as a power source for electrical consumers such as implements on the tractor. On-demand operation of powered auxiliaries supports fuel savings of around five percent with the tractor, combined with a simultaneous improvement in CO₂ emissions, performance, and drawbar power.
ZF-TERRA+ is available in several variants. The addition of an energy-storage device, such as a hybrid battery, converts the ZF-TERRA+ system into a powerful parallel mild-hybrid system. This upgrade paves the way for additional hybrid functions such as stop/start with powered auxiliaries, short-term boost of the engine, and engine calming. The extension of the generator system to a hybrid system further improves fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and performance, when used in combination with intelligent energy management. The integration of TERRA+ into the tractor transmission opens up a wealth of enhanced functions (full-hybrid system).
ZF supplies manufacturers of agricultural machinery with complete electrification systems as one-stop solutions. These solutions comprise not only individual components, but also energy management, i.e. the optimized interplay of generator, combustion engine, and electrical auxiliaries. Optimally matched transmission and energy management, as provided by ZF, is a core competence in the market for electrified drivetrains. ZF can draw on its longtime experience in vehicle management with CV and passenger-car hybrid projects.
Further ZF Trade Show Highlights
At the Agritechnica, ZF presents for the first time KINTRA steering axles of the Chinese subsidiary ZF YTO Axle Co., a joint venture concluded in 2014 with YTO, a leading construction and agricultural machinery manufacturer. The joint production of steering axles for tractors from 25 to 130 hp started in Luoyang in 2015.
The joint venture currently produces KINTRA steering axles in the power range of 25 to 130 hp. Step by step, the product portfolio will be extended by ZF steering axles of higher power ranges. The huge axle bandwidth of the newly established ZF YTO Axle Co. ideally supplements ZF's product line. The existing product range of KINTRA steering axles for agricultural machinery contains six models of portal axles in the power range of 25 to 70 hp as well as four models of planet axles in the power range of 70 to 130 hp.
Another focus of the ZF trade fair booth: the new TERRAPOWER and TERRAMATIC transmissions for tractors. Also the ZF Efficiency Package is presented. With this package of measures, ZF is combining its transmission, axle, and software development expertise and can thus offer more than the sum of its individual benefits. Thus, the contradicting requirements of the components can be reconciled: higher comfort, higher productivity, less fuel consumption, and less wear for the same costs.
