I hear a noise when I have the clutch pedal fully depressed. What could the problem be? Engine noise; Clutch release hub and bearing failure; Pilot bearing failure; Misaligned transmission.
The noise disappears when the engine RPM exceeds 1500 without depressing the clutch pedal. What does this condition suggest? This condition is referred to as neutral rollover. This is caused by the engine firing pulses, which are transmitted through the gear set. Some neutral rollover is normal. The dual mass flywheel should eliminate this concern.
There is a "whining" noise coming from my transmission. What could the problem be? It is possible that the input shaft gear and/or the countershaft drive gear are worn.
I am experiencing hard shifting problems, especially in 1st, 2nd, and Reverse. What are the possible causes of this condition? Clutch not completely releasing; Operator not fully depressing clutch pedal; Air/water in the hydraulic clutch hose; Insufficient reserve of synchronizer ( A defective clutch system can result in a premature loss of synchronizer reserve).
My transmission is leaking fluid from the tail section. What could cause this? Fluid leaking from the tail shaft seal is usually a direct result of over tightening of the "C" beam. If the transmission or "C" beam has been removed from the vehicle, it is critical that the "C" beam bolts are torqued to the correct specifications. (See GM service manual) Over tightening can cause the tail shaft housing to become "warped" and the seal will no longer be round and will not form a proper seal.

How can I identify which ZF automatic transmission is in my car? Located on the transmission is an I.D. plate with a ZF logo. The first line of numbers is the serial number of that transmission. The second line of numbers is the specification number of that transmission. There is also a type of transmission inked onto the I.D. plate (ie. 4HP22 4HP18, etc.).

What type of oil do I need to use in my ZF automatic transmission? Each transmission needs a specific type of transmission fluid to operate properly. The use of incorrect transmission fluid may cause extensive damage to internal parts of the transmission and may bring the transmission right back to your shop. Can I fill my 5HP30 transmission with ATF Dexron II instead of the oil specified? Why? It is not recommended by ZF to use any lubricant other that those specified (see lubrication list). Use of any lubricant other than those specified by ZF may cause extensive damage to the clutch (friction) plates inside the transmission and the torque converter.
What can I do if I am experiencing a condition with my 5HP30 transmission that feels as if the parking brake is on, or is as if I am starting off in two gears at once and then the transmission suddenly "breaks loose"? This type of problem is generally a valve body problem. ZF has made a reconditioning kit available to the aftermarket through your preferred ZF Parts passenger car transmission distributor. If this condition is not rectified it can cause more serious problems and more costly repairs.
