| How often should I add oil to my transmission? | It is not usual for ZF transmissions to need routine oil adjustment. We recommend a visual inspection of the transmission on a regular basis. If there are no signs of oil present outside the gearbox, there is no need to check the oil. If you are checking the oil, and consistently need to add, please call ZF Service for help. |
| Why does ZF have different retarder systems? | ZF utilizes two different retarder systems on transmissions. In vehicles which operate at low speeds, making many stops, ZF employs a “Primary” or Input retarder. Since this retarder is on the input side of the transmission, the retarder creates braking torque down to very low speeds. This greatly extends brake life. In vehicles which travel at highway speeds, we use the ZF-Intarder, which is located on the output side of the transmission. Braking torque is on the Intarder can be controlled by the driver to fit any circumstance encountered, thus saving service brakes. |
