Electronic Components from ZFCompetence in Mechatronic Systems & Integration

Today, mechatronic solutions are sought wherever massive, mechanical components and systems add a large amount of weight to vehicles. The effect: more compact, integrated assemblies, improved functionality and reliability and, of course, a large reduction in weight resulting in reduced fuel consumption. The prerequisites: intelligent controls, sophisticated sensors and switch modules, which remain reliable and robust over many years. Mechatronics for lighter, more environmentally friendly driving.

Electrification of the Powertrain

Compelling alternatives to the traditional drivetrain consisting of a combustion engine, transmission and drive axle have emerged: hybrids, electric motors with batteries or fuel cells. The new variety has already made a significant impression on ZF. In addition to new developments of completely electric transmissions for city vehicles used for short range distances, ZF continously optimizes hybrid drive technology. Whether car or commercial vehicle, ZF makes major contributions to resource- and environmentally-conserving transportation. And not only in theory: ZF products for powertrain electrification are economical, practical and ready for production. From the electric machinery through the inverter to the power electronics, everything comes from a single source.

Key performance electronic components More powertrain efficiency

In perfect harmony

Expertise in electronics is particularly important for hybrid technology. Its not enough to just install electric engines, performance electronics and batteries alongside the combustion engine in a parallel hybrid system; if you want to achieve fuel consumption savings, all these components need to work in perfect harmony.

This is where performance electronics have an important roll to play. ZF hybrid systems are scalable for different performance classes, which means that the performance electronics have to be multifaceted. The converters can power electric engines with any number of speeds in addition to asynchronous motors (ASM) such as permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM).

Energy management from one source

Successful hybrid systems do not just require sufficient electrical energy to ensure forward movement. The vehicle’s electronic system also requires energy the whole time. This is taken care of by the on-board transformer, which is integrated into the system’s architecture. A CAN bus controls the system, its integration into the operating strategy, and its energy management.

This modular system offers ZF customers added value: they can integrate their own systems into this framework, and it speeds up comprehensive system design and the design and development of different variations.

Electronic Control Unit

Electronics and software are key factors for meeting vehicle efficiency targets and hence reducing CO² emissions.

Bits and Bytes for Less Fuel Consumption and More Dynamics

The relevance of electronic components in vehicles is constantly increasing. Today, bits and bytes play a critical role in the product quality of vehicles and their components – a trend which is set to increase even further in the future.

ZF leverages its extensive electronics know-how to develop powerful control units. The transmission control software from ZF lowers fuel consumption while delivering more dynamics and comfort. A configuration consistently optimized for fuel consumption is just as much an option as comfort-oriented or sporty and dynamic gear changes.

In case of the 9HP, the worldwide first automatic transmission with 9 gears, the ZF engineers completely developed the control unit in-house, benefiting from their extensive hardware and software expertise. The electronic control unit significantly influences the 9HP's characteristics and enables the selection of the ideal gear in every driving situation – unnoticed by the driver.
