Research and Development

The development department of the business unit Aviation Technology works in close cooperation with the ZF Group corporate R&D center with more than 800 employees specializing in fundamental research in all key fields of transmission technology, providing ZF with a pioneering role in the aviation technology sector. In the field of helicopter transmissions, ZF is working on alternative materials, hybrid bearings, bearings with integrated sensors, new coatings, alternative lubricants, and high-load gear geometry. Also the Individual Blade Control (IBC), an Integrated Dynamic System (IDS), and the direct electric, swashplateless rotor control belong to the focal points of the business unit’s research activities.

Transmission manufacturing

ZF produces dynamic components for helicopter manufacturers all over the world with main focus on transmission and rotor controls. The high quality of engineering and manufacture guarantees an enormous reliability of transmission and rotor controls, thus ensuring the success of helicopter applications. More than 5.000 transmission systems have been produced so far.

Maintenance and technical logistics

For maintaining dynamic helicopter components, the business unit Aviation Technology at Calden near Kassel operates state-of-the-art production facilities for cutting machining, galvanic and chemical surface treatment, crack-testing, and controlled surface hardening (shot-peening) as well as an efficient test rig center. The on-site technical service is another focus of operations which ensures continuous supply with spare parts and tools including comprehensive technical support. If required, ZF also supplies full technical documentation which is permanently updated. Within the scope of technical-logistical support, new repair procedures for maintaining high-value parts are developed, tested, and approved in cooperation with the manufacturers. Individual components that reveal wear or material fatigue in the testing process can be repaired on-site.

Test rig technology

Universal transmission and rotor test rigs supplied by ZF Luftfahrttechnik GmbH are used in-house by ZF as well as by external aircraft manufacturers and operators. Manufacturers all over the world rely on the high quality of ZF test rigs when it comes to development, manufacture, and maintenance. For helicopter components, ZF develops and manufactures test rigs for main transmissions, tail and intermediate gearboxes, accessory gearboxes, propeller gearboxes, main and tail rotor heads, as well as rotor blades.
