ZF will be unveiling the newly developed continuously variable transmission (CVT) for construction machinery at bauma 2010. ZF cPOWER marks the beginning of a new age in construction machine technology – and opens the door for new drive concepts.
Technological leap with ZF cPOWER
Through the further development of power split continuously variable technology, already in use in agricultural machinery, significant fuel savings and productivity gains can be achieved in construction machinery. The demands placed on construction machinery are perfectly met by ZF's new CVT transmission technology, featuring a previously unthinkable level of efficiency.
Lower fuel consumption
Due to rising fuel prices and heightened concern about carbon emissions, the market is demanding more efficient drive systems. Emissions regulations (US EPA and EU directives) have placed technological limitations and constraints on diesel engines that will be difficult to observe with conventional transmissions. In a typical wheel-loader operating cycle, including the filling of the bucket, transport and loading, the advantages of the continuously variable transmission are clear regardless of speed. Already at start-up, most of the power output comes from the mechanical part of the transmission, which means that even during very short loading cycles, the utility of the CVT technology is seen in fuel consumption.
User-friendly
A trend toward lower engine speeds and a desire for engine stabilization through a constant-speed concept reflect the goals of environmental conservation and noise reduction. The continuously variable cPOWER from ZF does both. Using a sophisticated hydraulic transmission-control system and transmission-integrated on-board electronics, driving functions are optimized in terms of sensitivity and comfort, and power management is achieved.
