Openmatics
Open to anything
Along with its technology partner Intel, ZF is developing Openmatics as a brand new portal that will embrace a multitude of different telematics services. This standardized solution makes it possible to reduce significantly the number of systems installed into vehicles.
The term telematics means linking data from at least two separate information systems. Telecommunications transfer the collected data to a computer station, where it is processed.
Openmatics – what is it?
Nowadays, digital information is transferred from and to moving vehicles for may purposes – orientation, toll calculation, optimal fleet management and much more. However, most of these systems are specifically tailored to one service or one vehicle manufacturer and must be installed individually with a box and antenna in the vehicle.
The new development called Openmatics consists of an onboard unit in the vehicle, which captures and sends the data, and a web-based portal that handles the analysis.
The heart of the onboard unit is the powerful Atom processor from Intel. Equipped with this, the box is even ready for requirements that are still off in the future – including multimedia applications. The box transfers the captured data in real time to a server, where software applications (called “apps”) take over analysis and specific processing. Over the Internet, through an online portal, authorized users can call up these representations and put them to use.
Openmatics – Advantages
ZF’s collaboration with the US chip manufacturer Intel is not only a strategic win-win situation for both partners, but also for future users. Besides its competence in hardware and system architecture, Intel brings its expertise in standardizing open IT solutions. In addition to driveline know-how, ZF provides its worldwide service network that is also available for installing and upgrading Openmatics.
The system was born to be open. Openmatics is a platform independent of industry, vehicle manufacturer or service. Just as ZF can provide customers with its own applications for the system, vehicle manufacturers and third parties can program their own apps and offer them for download through the Openmatics portal to self-defined user groups. Fleet operators and transport companies get another big advantage, which is using just one telematics system for their whole fleet.
