The Hybrid Brake Pedal

Less weight
same toughness

Engineers form ZF's Chassis Technology division demonstrate with the lightweight components produced on the basis of endless fiber reinforced composite materials and injection molding how, without any compromises in terms of load-carrying capacities, 50 percent weight can be saved successfully.

Light and cost-efficient

Hybrid brake pedal made of fiber reinforced composite materials

ZF lightweight designs render numerous process steps in production superfluous and thus, warrant less costly manufacturing. Endless fiber reinforced composite materials, also called laminates, are continuous, fiber-reinforced thermoplastic plastics that excel via extremely high material strength and rigidity. With their innovation, ZF developers adapted the fiber alignment of the material directly to the component loading. Thus, the hybrid brake pedal only weighs 355 grams, approximately 50 percent less than a conventional steel brake pedal. Moreover, the unit can be produced more easily i.e. with less process steps involved than in the case of conventional pedals. In addition, the materials used by ZF are fully recyclable.
