With its Electric Vehicle Drive study, ZF shows that we won’t have to wait around too long for electric vehicles. The system is specially designed for city traffic: Urban areas in particular are plagued by ever-increasing traffic, and they are calling for a “clean” drive.

Private transport is becoming an endurance test for the environment and residents alike. Thankfully, electrical mobility can provide relief, since the argument advanced by skeptics about the smaller range of electric vehicles is not an issue in city traffic. In the long term, development of efficient energy storage could take e-mobility beyond the major population centers. Thus, ZF is using its expertise in the electrification of the drivetrain to develop pure electric drive systems for passenger cars. And in the electrical drive study, all components come from ZF, true our claim of being a “one-stop shop.”
Electric Vehicle Drive for Pessenger Cars
The electrical vehicle drive was designed to be compact and lightweight for use in small and weight-optimized e-vehicles; it weighs only 43 kg (95 lb). Nevertheless, it contains a 90 kW (120 bhp) electric motor (with integrated transmission space) that accelerates the vehicle up to 150 km/hr (approx. 90 mph). Thanks to the special features of an electric drive, the concept offers a unique driving experience: Unlike with combustion engines, which require a certain speed in order to unleash its full power, the electrical drive lets loose its full power immediately. And plenty of it: Maximum torque of 1400 Nm (1033 lb-ft) and acceleration from 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in nine seconds show that driving dynamics and e-mobility can go hand in hand. Due to the battery capacity, the system has a limited range of about 150 km (approx. 90 mi). That’s enough for a regular commuter – the electrical vehicle drive is therefore fully suitable for everyday use.
