A key design goal was to make the EcoLife bus transmission directly "hybrid ready."

The ZF-EcoLife is also available as a parallel fully hybrid solution. It comes “hybrid ready” from the factory; that is, in the hybrid variant an electric motor is found in place torque converter. So it does not require any more space than the conventional EcoLife transmission. This E-machine achieves improved performance of up to 120 KW (160.8 bhp). This machine delivers all the functions of a hybrid, from the automatic start-stop system through energy regeneration via acceleration boosts and braking to electric starting and completely electric powered driving. This opens up potential for fuel-savings of up to 20 percent – a benefit to the environment and transport operators alike.
