2010/03/02 ZF enters joint venture with Hero Motors Ltd. of India
ZF and Hero Motors Ltd. today signed a contract establishing the joint-venture enterprise ZF Hero Chassis Systems, securing access for ZF to India’s booming market for small cars. The automotive industry supplier is acquiring fifty percent of Hero Chassis Systems including two assembly plants in Halol, around 300 miles north of Mumbai, and in Talegaon, near Pune. ZF uses its expertise in the networking of components in the driveline to embark on a new business model: Under a strategic alliance with Intel, ZF will create a hardware and software platform which is available for telematics applications. ZF is strengthening its role in India’s booming economy. The automotive industry supplier has now opened an assembly plant in the industrial center of Pune, which will eventually turn out approximately 10,000 construction vehicle axles and transmissions annually. After years of growth, ZF reported sales of €9.3 billion during the crisis year of 2009 – a quarter less than the previous year (2008: €12.5 billion). Due to fluctuations and structural adjustments, primarily abroad, by the end of 2009 the number of ZF employees worldwide had declined by nearly 3,400, or roughly 5 percent, to 59,900. Sales for ZF have fallen by a third from January to August 2009 compared to the first eight months of 2008. For the entire year, ZF estimates that corporate sales will fall by a quarter to 9.2 billion euros and anticipates sharp net losses.
