ZF enjoyed very close ties to the legendary Lotus Formula 1 cars in the sixties. Lotus creator Colin Chapman worked closely with ZF design engineers. Transmissions were developed at the request of Colin Chapman and produced in Friedrichshafen. In the golden years from 1963 to 1968, Lotus won countless Formula 1 races.

Driving a Lotus 33 R9, Jim Clark won the Formula 1 World Championships in 1964. In 1965, Mike Spence won at Brands Hatch. Peter Arundell took third place in the South African Grand Prix.
