August Horch is one of the great pioneers of motor vehicle technology. His first car employed revolutionary technology including a front-mounted two-cylinder engine with an aluminum crankcase. Horch was the first manufacturer in Germany to use aluminum castings in engine and transmission housings, a driveshaft to transfer the engine power, and high-strength steel for gearwheels. Horch suppliers were required to meet the company’s high standards of design, technology and manufacturing. Horch enjoyed an unchallenged position in the luxury segment: nobility, high-ranking military officers, film stars and top athletes all drove Horch cars. The Horch 853 was regarded as the pinnacle of the Horch sports cabriolet tradition.
