In the sixties, Ford build the GT 40 racing car. The company’s patriarch, Henry Ford II, wanted a car to compete with Ferrari. His intention was to show the Italians who was best on the racetrack. The Ford GT 40 became a cult car after the Ford GT 40 Armada took first, second and third place honors at the 1966 Le Mans – a race that Ferrari had dominated over the previous years.

The Ford GT 40 became a cult car after the Ford GT 40 Armada took first, second and third place honors at the 1966 Le Mans – a race that Ferrari had dominated over the previous years. In 1967, 1968 and 1969, this long-distance race was again won by a Ford GT 40. That left Ferrari with no answer. The uncompromising sports car was a hurtling gasoline tank. The cars had 140 liters of gasoline on board, in 70-liter plastic tanks on either side of the driver, completely unprotected from side impacts.
