Openmatics - The Open
Telematics Standard.

Through its architecture and system of apps, the open, independent, neutral Openmatics platform guarantees vehicle manufacturers and third-party suppliers the greatest possible compatibility. Two strong partners see to the unification and integration of a multitude of individual solutions.

The idea

Openmatics, as the name suggests, isn’t just another isolated solution on the ever-expanding telematics market. Quite the opposite: this newly developed platform assures greater unity in modern telematics services. This is because Openmatics can capture and process a wide variety of vehicle data - from vehicle technology failures to anticipated arrival times. The system can be used with a multitude of applications, which makes Openmatics a platform for that’s suitable for practically any market segment.

The expertise

ZF uses its drivetrain expertise to prepare optimal data and evaluate information. At ZF we know the networking of various drivetrain components and so we can correctly interpret the vehicle’s statistical data correctly and usefully. Thanks to its many years of experience and knowledge, ZF is an expert contact when it comes to diagnosing transmissions and the entire drivetrain.

The system

A wide variety of solutions come in the form of apps on a single platform. That offers users the unique ability to assemble portfolios as they wish, based on their own ideas. The ability of everyone to program their own apps makes the system freely expandable and open to any third-party app and development expertise. Any app developer can determine whether to make his or her app available on the platform and at what price. On the one hand, this lets developers protect their competitive advantage, and on the other hand it enables them to treat app development as a new source of income.

The partners

Two strong partners have joined to develop and implement Openmatics: The powerful Atom chip - the heart of the system - comes from Intel, the chip manufacturer. Intel also lends its computing expertise to the project, which comes in useful when constructing the system and standardizing open IT solutions. ZF contributes its collective expertise in vehicle drivetrains, its web portal and in business applications.

The solution

Openmatics consists of two components: one is hardware, one is software. The onboard unit is installed in the vehicle itself. At the heart of the box is the powerful Atom processor from Intel. Equipped with interfaces for all current and future telematics applications, it sends data to the web portal in real time via GPRS, 3G or WLAN. Software applications analyze and process the information. Access to this portal is reserved only for authorized groups - this keeps sensitive information safe.
