To illustrate environmental performance, material and energy flows are represented in an input / output balance sheet. As of 2003, emissions have been calculated from energy consumption based on country-specific factors. Automotive manufacturers and suppliers agreed upon this method. Before 2003, factors from the GEMIS-VDEW 4.0 database had been used.

Key environmental figures place environmental statistics in the context of company operations. The ZF Group, which manufactures a large number of diverse products, set up environmental figures that compare material and energy flows to added values, sales, product volume, or employees. The following charts exclusively refer to sales and show the trend of selected environmental key figures from 2003 to 2007.
