The mechanical connection between the gearshift and transmission (via cable control or gearshift linkage) is replaced by an electronic connection. The communication between the gearshift and the transmission is analog or digital, or uses a bus system.

Shift-by-wire gearshifts provide optimal functional reliability and operating convenience. Less force is required to shift gears, and the shifting force characteristics can be selected by each (OEM) manufacturer individually.

Shift-by-wire gearshifts feature flexible integration capabilities in vehicle interiors (e.g. in the central console, steering column or dashboard). No opening in the floor of the vehicle is required. This eliminates the sealing problem, simplifies assembly by the manufacturer and improves crash behavior.

The modular shift-by-wire system in particular provides additional cost saving potentials through the use of existing components. Nevertheless, individual wiring layouts can be provided through variable positioning of the gearshift lever. The adaptation of only two components permits variable adjustment of the individual forces at all stable and intermediate positions.
